Consider the power of the idea taught in our beloved song “I Am a Child of God” . . .
Here is the answer to one of life’s great questions, “Who am I?”
I am a child of God with a spirit lineage to heavenly parents.
That parentage defines our eternal potential.
That powerful idea is a potent antidepressant.
It can strengthen each of us to make righteous choices and to seek the best that is within us.
Establish in the mind of a young person the powerful idea that he or she is a child of God
and you have given self-respect and motivation to move against the problems of life.Dallin H. Oaks

Teach children eternal potential: instill self-motivation
What parent has not had those “I want to pull my hair out” moments
when you are trying to get your children to do what they should be doing?
The more deeply your children understand why they should do things,
and what their actions can make them, the more willingly and energetically they will do them.
It’s like the old “sharpen the ax” adage.
As you spend time helping your children understand their potential, their hearts will change.
As you teach them this powerful, fundamental truth, you will sharpen their abilities.
That is time well spent.
What an amazing gift improved self-motivation will be when your teach your kids about eternal potential.
Instead of needing prodding and pressuring, they will gradually begin to “act of their own free will”.
Instead of doing things because Mom and Dad want them to,
they will do things because it will make them a stronger, happier, more amazing person.
It will make them more like Heavenly Father.
Respect for self & others
As your children begin to understand how Heavenly Father sees them
they can develop the confidence they need to deal with this crazy world even when you are not around.
That way of thinking can then lead to realizing
that Heavenly Father feels the same way about all of the people around them.
What a valuable understanding that can be when learning social skills.
How helpful that can be when they disagree with others or are mistreated.
The earlier they fill their hearts with an understanding of the preciousness of life,
the more they will be able to deal with such issues as the sacredness of procreative powers,
dealing with their own imperfection and the flaws of others,
dealing with bullying and abuse and many other challenging issues.
To see clearly, like Heavenly Father sees
Even for adults, life can be confusing.
Give your children the ability to see through Heavenly Father’s eyes
by teaching them about who they really are and who Heavenly Father sees them becoming.
Help them sweep away the mists of darkness and see the reality of Heavenly Father’s presence in their lives.
Help them see what a thrill it will be to become more and more like Him.
Onward and upward
What a joyful future you and your children can have
as you walk with hope, expectation and excitement into your coming progress.
The eternal potential of kids is an endless gift.
Who will they be?
What will they become?
Aren’t you excited to find out?
