Should Your Kids Watch General Conference? Here’s What the Prophets Say

General conference is such a bright point in your year.

You want to share that glow with your children.

But, is it too much to ask of them?

Here is what the prophets say.

Should your kids watch General Conference?

“It is when children are young that parents must be

innovative in helping them develop good habits

regarding conference participation.

Elder Neil L. Andersen

Conference brings opportunities to point out when they feel the Spirit.

“And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.”

3 Nephi 22:13

Children want to follow your example. They don’t want to be left out.

“Children and youth love to be included. We make a serious mistake if we assume that the conference is above their intellect and spiritual sensitivity.”

Elder Robert D. Hales

Watching together can enable future gospel discussions.

“The greatest blessings of general conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently in scripture: we gather to hear the words of the Lord, and we return to our homes to live them.”

Elder Robert D. Hales

The music at conference can touch their hearts when words do not.

“We are able to feel and learn very quickly through music … some spiritual things that we would otherwise learn very slowly.

President Boyd K. Packer

It is a chance to teach them that the Lord most often speaks to them when they are in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.

Revelation is a reality. It comes in the Lord’s way and according to the Lord’s timetable.”

 President Dallin H. Oaks

Don’t underestimate this generation. They can feel the Spirit just as much as any adult.

“Our Heavenly Father has reserved many of His most noble spirits—perhaps, I might say, His finest team—for this final phase.”

President Russell M. Nelson

You child can bring questions and problems to conference and have them answered.

As you prepare for general conference, I invite you to ponder questions you need to have answered. … There are messages in each general conference given as a gift and a blessing from heaven specifically for our personal life situations.”

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

They can get to know, trust and have testimonies of the leaders of the church.

“As our children are given opportunities to observe and learn the role of these special witnesses, they will receive a spiritual confirmation of the sacred calling of their Church leaders, and they will feel a deeper love for and interest in these leaders and their message.”

What better way could they use their time?

“As the time for conference arrives, we sacrifice other activities, “lay[ing] aside the things of this world, [to] seek for the things of a better.”  Then we gather our families to hear the word of the Lord, as King Benjamin’s people did.”

Elder Robert D. Hales

Give them a chance to feel proud of themselves because they did something difficult.

“Everything to do with becoming more like the Savior is difficult. . .  The Lord loves effort, because effort brings rewards that can’t come without it.”

Help them develop righteous habits and traditions.

“Each of us has traditions in our families. Some of them are material. Some of them have deep meaning. The most important traditions are connected with the way we live our lives and will last beyond us as our children’s lives are influenced and shaped.”

Cheryl C. Lant

Children need as much strength and inspiration as adult do.

“Oh, how we need general conference! Through conferences our faith is fortified, and our testimonies deepened.”

General Conference can be a priceless, gleaming treasure to your

whole family,

no matter what age they are.

Although it won’t be easy,

the reward for making the effort to bring your children the blessings

of conference will pay off for generations to come.

“If you will listen to the living prophet and the

apostles and heed our counsel, you will not go

astray.”

Elder M. Russell Ballard

P.S. Another wonderful tool to strengthen you children is taking time to talk to your children about the Temple and why you love to go there.

Here are some great reasons why.
