How to Teach Your Children Order Without Giving Orders

You struggle to raise your children with patience and love.

How can you possibly teach your children the joy of order while still nurturing a good relationship?

Creating order is driving you crazy!

Read on for help.

Teach your children order

Things you know:

  • Heavenly Father knows how to take chaos and create splendor.
  • You and your family want to become like Him.
  • The Holy Ghost is more likely to be in orderly places.
  • Your children need to learn how to be organized.

Things you feel:

  • Frustrated
  • Concerned
  • Even a little bit embarrassed?

We’ve all been there.

Deep breath.

Now listen to Elder Jeffrey R. Holland’s wise encouragement.

“My brothers and sisters, except for Jesus, there have been no flawless performances on this earthly journey we are pursuing, so while in mortality let’s strive for steady improvement.”

Jeffrey R. Holland

Heavenly Father has not set you up to fail.

He knows how to organize.

He knows how to teach you and your children to create order without losing your minds or your relationships.

But you know this, don’t you?

It’s just hard to remember sometimes.

“‘Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him … ,’ Moroni pleads. ‘Love God with all your might, mind and strength, then … by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ.’ Our only hope for true perfection is in receiving it as a gift from heaven—we can’t ‘earn’ it. Thus, the grace of Christ offers us not only salvation from sorrow and sin and death but also salvation from our own persistent self-criticism.”

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

So that’s the trick.

Remember that you don’t have to do this alone.

You don’t have to do it all right now.

Heavenly Father is fully capable of helping you.

2 practical ideas to teach children order

For you:

Even before you teach your child order, you can learn to enjoy it yourself.

Think back to the last time you created order.

Was it after you cleaned a room?

Was it when you took the time to read your scriptures before your crazy day began?

How did you feel?

Happy? Peaceful? Proud of yourself?

Do you remember?

Or did you rush off to the next task on your list and missed the reward?

Those feelings of peace and happiness,

They come from the Holy Ghost.

Next time you organize or clean, take a few minutes to just sit in that beautiful, organized space.

Enjoy what you’ve created.

You earned it.

First, give yourself the gift of order

For your children:

Ask your child to make one surface in their room “picture perfect.”

Then take a picture of it.

Show the picture to other people.

Share your positive feelings about your child’s accomplishment on social media (with their permision).

Help your child feel proud of that one spot, that one moment when things are just right.

Challenge your child to keep that one place ” just right” for a whole week.

What a relief to have a way to teach your child order without the trauma!

Here are some questions you may want to ask your child:

Look how beautiful you made that spot. Do you like it?

How do you feel when you organize things?

How do you think Heavenly Father feels when he organizes things?

Every bit of order that you create will invite the Spirit into your home and your heart.

You will find more opportunities to share truly beautiful truths with your family.

Here are some ideas about what and how you can use the Temple to help you.

“If we persevere, then somewhere in eternity our refinement will be finished and complete—which is the New Testament meaning of perfection.”
